Nothing is public by default

Another traveler only sees your party's display name, general info, and trip overlap after you've chosen to be discoverable — and you control that with your profile visibility setting (everyone / connections / nobody). There's no map of live locations and no directory of exact hotels.

Messaging unlocks only after mutual interest

You can't message a stranger cold. A connection has to be requested and accepted by both sides before messages are exchanged, and either side can end it at any time.

Kids are never individually identifiable

We only ever collect a coarse age range for a child in your party (e.g., "6–9") — never a name, birthdate, or photo. There is no way, by design, for another user to learn a specific child's identifying details through Overlap.

No exact addresses

If you add an accommodation area to a trip, it's a general label (like a neighborhood), never an exact address, hotel name and room, or ship cabin. Don't put exact addresses in your bio or messages either — see below.

Block and report, always available

You can block another user at any time to end all contact, and report a profile, message, or behavior for: harassment, inappropriate content, a fake profile, a scam, a general safety concern, or a child safety concern. Reports go to our moderation queue and can result in a warning, suspension, or permanent ban. Blocking and reporting don't require the other person to be notified first.

• Video call or have an extended chat first. Someone unwilling to talk before meeting is a red flag.
• Tell someone not on the trip — a friend or family member back home — who you're meeting, where, and roughly when, and check in with them afterward.
• Meet the first time in a public place (a café, a well-known landmark, a hotel lobby), not in anyone's accommodation.
• Keep your own transportation plan. Don't rely on the other party for your only way to get home.
• Don't share your exact hotel, room number, or itinerary minute-by-minute until you've met in person and feel comfortable.
• Trust your instincts. It's always okay to cancel, reschedule to a public place, or leave — you don't owe anyone an explanation.
• If children will be present at a meetup, treat the same precautions as non-negotiable, and consider having another adult from your party present.

• Asking you to pay for anything, send money, or share financial information — Overlap never involves payments between users.
• Pressuring you to move the conversation off-platform immediately, especially combined with urgency.
• Pushing to meet somewhere private, or resisting a public first meeting.
• Asking for a child's name, school, exact age, or photo — information Overlap deliberately never asks for.
• Any behavior that makes you uncomfortable, even if you can't fully explain why.

Report it from the connection or profile, and if you believe you or someone else is in immediate danger, contact local emergency services (911 in the U.S.) first — Overlap is not a substitute for that, and our moderation team cannot respond in real time.

Every report is reviewed by a member of our team. We may warn, suspend, or permanently ban an account depending on severity, and repeat or serious violations (harassment, scams, anything involving child safety) result in an immediate ban. We keep an internal log of moderation actions for accountability. If a report involves potential illegal activity or risk to a child, we cooperate with law enforcement as required by law.

Because Overlap is currently a small, closely held product, reports are read by a real person, usually quickly — but we don't promise a specific response time, and reports are not a substitute for contacting emergency services when there's immediate risk.
